FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) is a digital file format used in science for the storage, transfer and editing metadata (spreadsheet), most often this format is used in astronomy.
SAOImage DS9 supports astronomical images and binary tables, providing data analysis methods allowing to cope with all the challenges that astronomers tasks. It is possible to access local data and files from the network, supports work with multiple files, as presented in several ways (mosaics, tiles, etc).
SAOImage DS9 allows with standard astronomical image manipulation (rotate, crop, resize, and more), supports panning, 2D and 3D representation of astronomical data, can be expanded with plugins and scripts, as well as be used as a module in other applications (such as application package IRAF).
SAOImage DS9 can export the result into a color image with logarithmic, linear, quadratic, square and power-the color distribution, as well as a separate channel (RGB/Red, Green, Blue) in the FITS file-compatible format (*.fits *.fit *.fts *.fits.gz *.fits.bz2 *.fits.Z *.fits.z), if necessary, further image processing can be done in any graphics editor (supports FITS format, such as GIMP). The management of the application (set of applications) is performed using the mouse and/or keyboard combinations.
SAOImage DS9 is a completely independent application (no need to install third-party utilities and libraries), developed at the Smithsonian astrophysical Observatory (CAO) with funding from the research center Chandra X-ray Science Center (CXC) and the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Center (HEASARC).
