Install the NVIDIA driver 378 on Linux Mint

System
Install the NVIDIA driver 378 on Linux MintNVIDIA started the new year with the submission of its first graphics driver NVIDIA 378 for Linux and short term support.
The output of driver NVIDIA 378 is making some interesting changes and additions.

Note. Before downloading and installing new driver, make sure that your system has a supported NVIDIA GPU. You can also use automatic scanning, contacting the Drivers section on the website of NVIDIA to find the latest drivers for your NVIDIA GPU.
How to identify and install the correct driver for your Nvidia video card in Linux Mint can be viewed on page "How to detect and install the correct version of the Nvidia driver on Linux Mint". Otherwise, after you install the NVIDIA driver 367 you risk not to run the system.

Installation latest version into Linux Mint:

If you not previously added repository to the system

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

You can set in the driver Manager or in the terminal

sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-378 nvidia-settings

After the installation, restart the computer to activate this driver.

After a new logon check the installed graphics driver utility NVIDIA X Server Settings, search in the menu or in the terminal command:

glxinfo | grep OpenGL

If you installed a new kernel, it is possible to even reconfigure the kernel module with the new driver. To do this, run the following command in the terminal:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-378
In the case when in the terminal you will see the impossibility of reconfiguring the kernel module with the new driver, it is better to stop using it, otherwise you may get black screen after restarting the computer, i.e. the system will be inoperable.
How to get out of the situation "black screen", see "black boot screen after installing video driver".

Good Luck!!!

i can confirm, it's work like a charm on 4.9.6 + 378. - with working optimus..
the only bug, when i have connected external fullhd monitor, after reboot always it switch back to notebook as primary display.. so i need to switch 3x fn+f10 on my ideapad to make hdmi only output.. in this process sometimes i loose skype icons from notification bar..
