Happened something strange. I wrote this article, but it somehow disappeared from the site, maybe I accidentally removed. In General, re-write the article.
NOTICE! All the steps below you do at your own risk. I got no problems. Also I installed a fresh, updated Linux Mint 17
To start with, what Nvidia-prime is not yet supported in the Display Manager MDM.
Therefore, we need to install LightDM from Ubuntu rep.
DESCRIBES HOW TO INSTALL ONLY IN CINNAMON AND MATE
1. To install LightDM in Linux Mint 17 follow command in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install -y lightdm gnome-settings-daemon indicator-session ubuntu-mono unity- gnome-control-center- light-themes unity-greeter/trusty
During installation terminal will ask to choose Display Manager, So select "LightDM" using 'Tab' and 'Enter' keys.
2. Only For Mate Edition - To avoid problems when logging in, use these commands:
cd /tmp && wget -O LightDM.desktop https://mintguide.org/files/LightDM.desktop sudo mv LightDM.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/
3. Remove Ubuntu Logo from LightDM:
sudo rm /usr/share/unity-greeter/logo.png
4. Install Ubuntu-Tweak to make changes in "Lightdm"
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
Open Ubuntu-Tweak > Go to Tweaks > select Login Settings, See the following image and same settings in Ubuntu-Tweak.
5. Restart PC then select desktop from LightDM and login.
NOTICE! If you want to get back MDM simple enter following command in terminal and choose MDM option in Terminal:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm
6. Now nothing prevents us to install the Nvidia Driver and Nvidia-Prime.
sudo apt-get purge bumblebee* bbswitch-dkms
Install Nvidia Prime and the proprietary Nvidia driver:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331 nvidia-settings nvidia-prime prime-indicator
-Restart the computer.
Furthermore later you can install a newer driver, for example (INSTALL THE NVIDIA DRIVER 340.24 FOR LINUX MINT)
7. Switching graphics cards
Log in settings manager «NVIDIA X server Settings», running nvidia-settings
