VirtualBox - virtual machine, install the latest version

Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6 and 3.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD.

VirtualBox is being actively developed with frequent releases and has an ever growing list of features, supported guest operating systems and platforms it runs on. VirtualBox is a community effort backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute while Oracle ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria.
 
Install/update latest version of VirtualBox in Linux Mint:
1. Download DEB package the latest version from the official website. Download (For Linux Mint 17.3 - Vivid version, For Linux Mint 18 - xenial version)
Don't forget to choose the correct architecture. i386-32bit, MD64-64bit. I have Linux Mint 17 and I have chosen as shown on the picture.

2. Download VirtualBox Extension Pack from the official website. Download

3. Firstly you should install VirtualBox, press F5, then install Extension Pack

4. In order to enable you to connect USB flash drives, you must add a group vboxusers to your profile.

Open Control Center=>Users and Groups=>Manage Groups

OR

Just run this command in terminal:

sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers `whoami`

5. For the next automatic update VirtualBox to the latest version, I suggest to connect to the official VirtualBox repository:

Write the repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list (For Linux Mint 17.3 - vivid version, For Linux Mint 18 - xenial version)

echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian vivid contrib" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Add and register a key in the system package repository (for linux mint 17.3)

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

for linux mint 18

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

6. Reboot system and enjoy
