Asciinema is a small program with open source that you can install in your Linux system, to capture what you do in the terminal.
Many Linux fans trying to encourage the use of free Linux distributions their relatives and friends. Once beginners start to learn a new system, they sometimes have technical issues, especially when working with the terminal. But not always they are close by, and ask you questions on the phone/Skype or email. And of course, the best answer, this is a clear example of execution of the desired commands in the terminal with explanations.
The simplest and most effective way to explain they work in the terminal, record and send a video capture of the screen during a terminal session. For this purpose there is a program called SimpleScreenRecorder.
But when writing the program SimpleScreenRecorder can get pretty bulky video file, which is not always possible to send e-mail. And even if you send this video, a beginner may not be able to open it.
In this you will help Asciinema.
The session is automatically uploaded on the website asciinema.org and your terminal displays a URL link that you can share the recorded session. When the recording is finished, you copy the link and send it to your friend/relative, and he can access it at any time to view the necessary actions.
But the main highlight of the program is that with the link and viewing it on video, at any time can stop the video, copy from it the necessary commands and execute them in the terminal.
Installation latest version into Linux Mint:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:zanchey/asciinema
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install asciinema[/simterm]
After the program is installed, to record a terminal session open a terminal, type and run the following command:
After the command completes, you should see a warning reading:
~ Asciicast recording started.
~ Hit Ctrl-D or type “exit” to finish.
And immediately initiate any necessary explanatory steps in the same terminal.
When the recording is finished (pressing Ctrl-D or typing exit and execution,) will reappear notice:
~ Asciicast recording finished.
~ Press <Enter> to upload, <Ctrl-C> to cancel.
After displaying links to your video in the terminal, you can open it yourself, or copy and send to a friend/relative.
